6 Reasons You Should Hire a Professional Photographer for Senior Portraits
Let's be real, it's 2019 and everyone has access to taking pictures by just whipping out your phone and turning on portrait mode to make it feel fancy, am I right??
And while that is great for taking photos with friends or making sure you document how cute you look on gameday, that is not what you want to rely on for some of the most important pictures/memories you want to have for the rest of your life. You also don't want to bank on a friend or someone's mom who has a decent camera that has an interest in taking pictures--even though I'm sure they are good, don't you want absolutely amazing? Here are my top reasons for hiring a professional to make sure you look stunning in your Senior photos and get everyone to swoon over them.
Not to brush off my shoulders or anything (too corny?) but I have done this a time or two--I mean ALOT. I have shot a variety of events and venues, including weddings where you have to know what you are doing to make sure you capture the perfect shots. Knowing the best angles, lighting and running in to situations that I have dealt with before, make it much easier for me to make sure I keep things on track and you looking fabulous.
2. LIGHTING and LOCATION
This is the MOST important part of any session.....let me say it again for the people in the back!! You could have the most beautiful scenery or back drop, but if your lighting is not good your photos will not be good. Sometimes it is hard to just let go and trust someone else's judgement but I promise I will not steer you wrong when I face you a certain way or ask you to do something that may seem odd like hop towards me. It took me a while to learn the art of perfect lighting and this is something that can make or break your images.
3. CAMERA LENSES
I have lots of different lenses that I like to use depending on the situation or what look I want to go for with a certain shot. Unfortunately, these puppies are expensive and your friend's mom probably won't have the variety that a professional photographer may have. This is what gives you that really blurry background or allows for a wide angle to be super dramatic. We all like being a little extra now and then :)
4. EDITING and SOFTWARE
This is the one that people don't really think about as much. The session it's self is only about one third of the process and I don't get to just plug my camera up and deliver them. Once the photos are taken, I have to go through and pick out the best photos (you don't want me to give you one in the middle of a sneeze), upload them to my computer, import them in to Lightroom, edit each and every one (I get rid of those little blemishes if you have them), export them, upload them and then after all of that, I email your gallery. This is why it can take a few weeks to get them back--because I want to make sure you are going to LOVE and want to share you images.
5. I WANT WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU!
Any time someone emails me and says they want me to take their Senior Photos, I get so excited!! I automatically start planning what would be best for them and how I can make their session the best it can be. I am invested in making sure you get what you pay for. I also want to make sure you feel good and uplifted during your session and then especially once you get your images back and see how you totally rocked it. An amateur photographer will not necessarily tell you adjust so you look extra skinny or jump up and down because you figured out how to own it!!
Is that a word? Not everyone can look at an open field, run down building, or random bush on the side of the road and think it would be the perfect place for photos. My husband rolls his eyes at me when I pull over or turn down a random road to check out a potential session spot. I say this all the time to clients, "I know this looks weird, but I promise it is going to look so good!" They are always surprised when I show them how great they look because they trusted me.
You will have these photos for years to come and while it may not seem that important now, in 10, 20, 50 years you will be able to look back and say, "Yes girl!! You looked so good!" With all this being said, I am not trying to knock amateur photographers because I was once one myself. Thankfully I have grown and feel confident now in my craft. So save the cellphone photos and soccer mom cameras for fun photos and football games because these are obviously memories too!! But leave your Senior Portraits in the hands of a pro.
